Or at least in The States!

There was a poll taken in America showing that above the Jewish, female, Hispanic and even homosexual people, it is actually the atheist that people would not vote for in a presidential election. It is really a startling result; particularly to myself as I have always believed that atheists are the most free thinking, rational and logical individuals. None the less this poll shows that the dislike is so common that 53% would not vote for an atheist in a presidential election and only 45% would be willing to support an atheistic candidate*.

In fact I have found people talking over the net about coming out of the closet to their parents, family and friends about their belief in a world without god, and the hardship that they have to face in light of the anger and confusion the god fearing folk around them express. The sudden bias that because they are no longer a soldier of god, they must therefore suddenly lack morals and ideals and will act accordingly.

What is it that is so despicable about those who do not believe in god(s)? And is religious belief a real justification of moral high ground in light of them? Hopefully the communities will be able to get over their excessive defensiveness to atheist beliefs and come to view those who do not believe in a neutral light and see some kind of common ground. There is after all acceptance of different religions with different beliefs, why not the atheist?
